Our Philosophy

At Ermington Rainbow Cottage we are committed to providing the highest quality of care and learning for all children in partnership with families and the community, using the environment and program to extend children's interests and abilities.

In relation to children:

We view children to be capable individuals who bring with them their own interests, abilities, talents, and ideas. We value and respect each child and appreciate their uniqueness. They have a right to be active participants in their own learning, to share their views and ideas, and to feel that they are valued and respected for their perspective. As educators we believe it is our role to foster this by providing a safe and secure environment, and a challenging and meaningful program.

In relation to family:

We recognise family as the most important and influential aspect in the lives of young children. The relationships between children and their families must not be undervalued. We encourage the participation of families is all elements of their child's program. We aim for positive relationships with family members with a foundation of mutual respect, and open communication so that children's learning and development is consistently progressing.

In relation to community:

We believe the community to be an important part of the growth and development of children as they become active participants in their community. We strive to be an excellent service within our local community. We aim to include community within our program to enhance all aspects. Community resources are seen as effective tools to further children's learning, growth and development.

In relation to educators:

Educators within the service work collaboratively to achieve the highest quality care and learning for the children within the service. The team effort uses communication, knowledge, and skills for positive outcomes in all aspects of the functioning of the service. We aim to have trust and respect as a foundation to providing an environment where ideas, knowledge, questions, and suggestions can be made, heard, considered and reflected upon. We critically reflect on our actions in order to evaluate and assess, therefore identifying areas for further development. We understand that professional development is an ongoing process which requires education and training in all areas of the education and care of children. We recognise each educators unique skills and knowledge and view them as integral elements to the success of our service. We aim to provide for them a satisfying and safe work environment that gives them a sense of fulfillment.

In relation to environment:

We view the environment as a third teacher and understand that we, as educators, have a responsibility to demonstrate a positive approach to the environment from which children often develop their understandings of the world. The learning environments within the service are prepared in a way that is welcoming, enriching the lives and identities of the children and all participants therein. We embrace the diversity found within the service and the wider community, demonstrating acknowledgement, appreciation and acceptance through embracing and celebrating traditions and cultures within our program.

In relation to program:

In Early Childhood Education our focus in the children. We believe they benefit most in all the developmental domains through a program that is meaningful, integrated, and emergent. Children are unique individuals who develop at their own pace and our program is developed to allow them to explore, create, discover and imagine. Using both planned and spontaneous experiences,as well as intentional teachings, that are included based on children's interests and developmental needs, we aim to enrich children's understandings in collaboration with their active participation.
